The Forest of Nadine

The Forest of Nadine is the first in my series The Orbs of Power.

Thirteen-year old Jaden dreams of magic and wizards –little does he know those dreams are prophesied to change his magic-deprived world forever.

Only the fanatical, including his best friend Jax, swear by the existence of magic, but Jaden knows better –or so he thought.

He questions his beliefs when mysterious things start happening at school. During detention a swarm of rats attack Jaden which forces him upon his raw magical abilities which saves him. Soon after the discovery of his powerful magic, Kensa, an evil Darkness witch, orders creatures to invade his school and capture him. This forces Jaden into a dangerous search for the Orbs of Power.

Legends say wizards have hidden the world's source of magic, the Orbs of Power, until the world is ready. Without them, no one can be trained in magic. Jaden learns that he must focus his magic in order to find the Orbs, or they may never be seen again, or worse, fall into the hands of Kensa, whose plans with them will destroy his world.

Chapter 1 (part 1)

Chapter 1

The icy rain stung Jaden’s face as he ran. He could hear his heart screaming at him to rest a moment, his legs shaking in dispute. But he couldn’t. The Forest of Nadine was near, his mission soon complete.

Jaden panicked as he saw his pursuer, Talon, a 3rd class wizard sent by the dark 1st witch Kensa, sprinting through the trees, not seventy feet behind. Nearly two full days he had chased him, but was never this close.

Topping a hill he spotted the black trees, recognizing the forest; it was within a few yards. Just another moment and I’ll be rid of the orb forever.

“AHH!” his body seized in agony as he was hit by Talon’s spell. Crashing into the ground, he felt his consciousness dwindle from the pain. He could only watch as the green orb he had protected his entire life fly from his hands and roll into the forest. Before everything went dark, a glimmer of hope crossed his face. It made it.

Gathering the energy he could, Talon cried out, “CESOME!” A bolt of energy disappeared into the forest. His power was useless. The orb vanished into the darkness.

Stopping just outside the black trees, Talon stared, gasping for air. He quickly dismissed the impulse to enter the forest, knowing the consequences. The horrifying stories of those who entered, spoke loud and clear.

What words would suffice for his failure? Deep horror filled his gut. Thoughts of a life in the abyss raged through his mind.

What have you done?” he shivered as the fury of his master’s voice echoed through his mind.

Turning, he glared down at the man that lay behind him, just a few feet from the forest. “What have YOU done?” he growled through clenched teeth.

Lesevesitate! the fallen man levitated just off the ground. My master will have me under for this. Talon moaned. “What have you done?” he repeated it over and over as if it would somehow undo the deed. “I’ll have a full report to give of you,” he snarled.

I’ll have to make a stop at Merl’s for advice. Yes, he’ll know exactly what to do.

Desisesappear! the two disappeared.

The ever-changing orbs

I am still trying to create what the orbs will look like. I have them in my mind...now the graphical design part -ugh!

Here are their mystical powers if you will:

Black Orb: Dark
Purple Orb: Ice
Yellow Orb: Lightning
Red Orb: Fire
Green Orb: Forest
